I want to print a check payable to "Robert Smith." However, I don't want my payee name to be "Robert Smith" because it would be listed under the R's! I want the payee name to be "Smith, Bob" so it will appear in the S's. Can I do this?

Here's how.

  1. Create or rename a payee "Smith, Bob."

  2. Go to Transactions | Info for Name & Address. Select payee "Smith, Bob."

  3. On the Name line, type "Robert Smith." Note that you're limited to 40 characters in this field, so there is plenty of room. Select OK to return to the FN desktop.

  4. The Payee Name (Smith, Bob) and the Address (Robert Smith) print separately on the check. This looks strange if the Payee Name and the Address are different. Fix this as follows: Go to the check setup screen. Get there by selecting Transactions | Print Checks. Select the account you're printing checks for. If no check comes up, select Sample. Once the check or sample check appears, select Change Settings. Change the settings for "Payee name" to be the same as the settings for "Address-1st line." Now the payee name (Smith, Bob, in this example) doesn't print at all and the full name does.

Note that there are two great benefits to this technique:

  • The Address field can have up to 40 characters, which is a life-saver for long and complicated names.

  • The Address field can have any method of capitalization! A payee that you enter as AAA will wind up as Aaa. The only way around this is to use spaces and have your payee name be A A A. The address field doesn't do that. If you enter AAA in the Address field it will stay AAA, so those extra spaces aren't needed.
