I have a FN8 Demo and everything is fairly well so far but I can't print a report. I was able to print a screen with my printer but not a report which is what I need. I get two error messages. "FNWIN81 caused an invalid Page Fault in Module GD132.DLL (or other times GDI.EXE).
I am an 4.1 FN user (DOS Program) and am considering to update. I have Windows 98 but am in the process of buying a new computer with probably Windows XP Home Edition.
I have two printers. One is HP Laser Jet 5L (which I prefer using for black and white printing) and the other is HP DeskJet 970Cxi a color printer.
I tried both printers and get the same error messages. I made each one the default printer and each time FN had the correct printer in setup. I did update the printer driver for HP 5L from a driver download from HP so it's up to date.
What should I do to print any report. I was able to print the screen one time, as I said before, so it is a mystery to me why I can't print a report.

Hello Ed, sorry to hear that you are having trouble printing your reports.

This problem is some sort of driver error or conflict. To better troubleshoot your problem, can you give me more information on the following:

1. Do you have a program called "First Aid" or "First Aid 97" installed on your computer?

2. Do you have a Matrox Millennium or a Matrox Mystique video card in your computer?

3. Do you have the following bonus software installed from HP:

  • By Design Home
  • HP Print creator
  • HP Cartogra
  • HP Instant Delivery

    4. Have you ever received the essage: "Error loading GDI.EXE. You must reinstall Windows." when trying to print?

    5. Are you able to view a Print Preview in FN?

    6. Can you print a web page from Internet Explorer? What about Microsoft Word or any other Windows application?

    7. Have you tried using a different yet compatible driver for your HP5L like the HP5 driver for example?

Let me know what you find out. Please reply to this post by clicking the Post Reply button at the bottom left hand side of this post.

    Answers to your questions
    1. No
    2. No
    3. None of the four listed
    4. No
    5. Yes in version 4.1. No in version 8.1.
    6. Yes to Internet Explorer,Word,Excel and Word Perfect.
    7. I have not tried HP5 driver but I did download from HP the latest driver for HP5L and have an icon in my desktop "lj622en"
For your additional information in case I was not clear previously:
If I go into "Chart of Accounts" I am able to print with both printers by clicking "File" and then click either "Print Screen" or "Print Properties" and I will get a print out. I do get a printout of the Chart of Accounts, Alphabetically and Numerically. This works for both printers. I should be able to get the same printout lists in Reports. When I try Chart of Accounts in Reports I cannot print preview, print setup or print without getting the error message and then having version 8.1 shut down by the computer. I have tried shutting down the computer and going back into FN with no success.
I will try the driver HP5 after I send this memo but so far no success with either printer for Reports.

Thank you for the detailed reply. Yes, printing the Chart of Accounts screen is a good test to narrow the print problem down to the reports in Financial Navigator. You mentioned that you downloaded the latest driver from HP for your HP5L and have an icon on your desktop called “lj622en”. I checked on the HP website and this is indeed the latest driver file for the HP5L running under Windows98. Have you tried to install this driver yet? Typically, you would double click on this icon to start the driver installation process. Also, let me know if you have any success with downloading the HP5 driver from HP and using that instead of the HP5L driver.

I can't print with any driver I have installed for HP5L or HP5. DeskJet 970 Cxi does not print either. Very confusing since I may print in other situations but not Reports which is essential for me. I always check that the printer I want to use is the Default printer.

    Hello Ed,

Thanks for your response. Let’s try to isolate the problem through system files that FN uses to print.

Determine the version number of the Vsview6.ocx file:
    1. Locate the Vsview6.ocx file on your computer.
    2. Right click on the Vsview6.ocx file and select Properties.
    3. Click on the Version tab and note the version number of this file. What is your version number for Vsview6.ocx?

Determine if the problem occurs before or after the Vsview6.ocx file is used:
    1. Rename your Vsview6.ocx file to something else (Vsview6.bak for example).
    2. Start FN and try to print a report.

Normally, you will get an error message that says Vsview6.ocx is not installed or correctly registered. However, do you get the “invalid Page Fault in Module GDI.EXE” before you get the Vsview6.ocx error? This will determine if your GDI.EXE error occurs before or after the Vsview6.ocx file is used.

    Re-install the FN demo:
With your Vsview6.ocx file still renamed to something else, re-install the FN demo. This will ensure that a clean copy of Vsview6.ocx is installed on your computer.

Let us know what you find out.

    George:
Yesterday I re-installed FN Demo and today I re-installed both printer drivers and updated both. Before I read your reply I attempted to print Reports. Most of the time I was able to print with both printers. Only once did I get:

    Financial Navigator
    Run Time error '381'
    Invalid Property Array Index
This was with the LaserJet 5L printer

However the report printed and when I clicked OK on that error window I was back onto my desktop.

I checked the Vsview6.ocx file and the version number is "6,0,0,8"
I didn't rename it as the printers seem to be working so I can't answer your question if GDI.EXE is before or after unless you want me to. I was not able to download FN8 Demo using AOL. I originally accomplished this with AOL but had to use Internet Explorer yesterday together with AOL.

    Ed,

Glad to hear you are able to print. Yes, you have the correct version of Vsview6.ocx. It sounds like either re-installing FN or your printer drivers--or both did the trick.
