We are starting to use positive pay so that our bank can verify each check we write. We send the bank a CSV file of the Navigator transactions each day. The dates in that file have a three-letter month like “Oct 31 07” but our bank requests the date in numeric format like “10/31/2007.” We are using Navigator 8.2.

When you export a report from Navigator to CSV, Navigator puts the date in a text format that even Excel has a hard time understanding. Instead, export to Excel. The dates are in the numeric format the bank requests. If the bank will accept Excel, send the Excel file. If the bank prefers CSV, select File | Save as CSV in Excel and send them the CSV file. You can convert reports to Excel with one click by selecting the Excel icon at the top of any report screen.

There are three ways to put a Navigator report in Excel. Only one of them puts the date in a numeric format that Excel (and the bank) recognizes:
File | Export to Excel - Date in Navigator format "Mar 20 07" so don't use if you need numeric dates.
Excel button on toolbar - Date in Navigator format "Mar 20 07" so don't use if you need numeric dates
File | Save as XLS - Date in Excel format "03/20/2007" so use this method.

Save as XLS works with Navigator 8.2 and later. For Navigator 8.0 & 8.1 there is no Save as XLS option. You can upgrade to the current Navigator Version to use the easier Save as XLS method or use the method below for older versions. Your version of Excel may operate differently. Refer to Excel help for additional information about converting files and dates.
Display the report on your screen.
Select File | Output to File.
Select Save as type: Comma Delimited *.csv.
Enter a file name for the CSV file.
Save to your desktop or somewhere convenient.
Change the file extension of the CSV file from .csv to .txt so that Excel will allow you to convert it instead of putting it directly into a spreadsheet.
Open Microsoft Excel.
In Excel, select File | Open.
Select Files of type: Text Files (*prn, *.txt, *.csv) .
Browse to the .txt file and open it. The Text Import Wizard appears.
Select Delimited.
Select Next.
Select Comma Delimiters if not already slected. The data should be nicely organized in columns in the Date preview window.
Select Next. Each column has a heading "General".
Select the first column with dates. The column turns black to show that it is selected.
Select Date in Column data format to change the formatting from General to Date. The heading for the column changes to "MDY".
Repeat previous two steps for each column with dates.
Select Finish. The data is now in an Excel spreadsheet with the dates in a format that Excel will recognize.
Use the standard Excel formatting options to change the dates formatting to MM/DD/YY or whatever you need.
