I recently re-installed 8.0.2 on my computer so that I no longer had the run time error 50003. Now, when I go in to format my reports - 12 mth Bal Sheet (for example)- I select "portrait" and the system will not print the report as portrait. It doesn't changed the view to portrait in print preview, nor does it save this change to this report, even though I have selected the button to save these changes to this report only. It doesn't save any of the changes I make to the report layout/format. Any ideas?

It sounds like the Smart Print settings are causing your problem. The purpose of Smart Print is to make reports fit on a page.

Try this:

  1. Select the 12-month Balance Sheet report.

  2. Select Format | Report Layout

  3. On the Layout tab, make sure that Default Orientation is set to "Portrait."

  4. Select Use Smart Print to Fit but make sure that Change to Landscape is NOT selected.

  5. Select Apply settings to All Reports and Save Settings. Now all your reports will print in Portait.

If you want a report to alway print in portrait then make sure the Change to Landscape option is turned off.
With the report on the screen, select Format | Report Layout. On the Layout tab, under Fit Report on a Page, uncheck the [ ] Change to Landscape option. Select Save only for this report and select ok. Now the report will always be in portrait.

The next problem may be that the font size is too small. Uncheck the option to [ ] Reduce Font Size just below the Change to Landscape option.

The last problem may be that now the report will not fit on a single page. Several things can be done depending on what is important.
1) Set the body font to a suitable size by select Format | Body Font.

2) Change the columns widths by adjusting the widths of the column between the columns headers with the mouse similar to a spreadsheet. Also several columns widths can be adjusted by hiliting the columns and selecting Format | Column | Widths and entering the same desired width for all the columns hilited.
Note: columns widths for names can be narrower than the length of the longest name. If so they will be truncated based on the Word Wrap option on Report Layout. With Word Wrap option checked then the name will be wrapped at the word boundary. On the other hand with the Word Wrap option unchecked, then the name will be truncated at any character so it will show more of the name.

3) Hide any columns not needed by selecting Format | Column | Hide.

Note in FN 8.0, the columns width, column order, column name and body fonts are automatically saved for each report for each set of data files. So these setting can be different for other data files.

Hope this helps to better use the power of formating reports.
