It is easy to change the name that appears at the top of reports:

  1. Select File | Change Entity Name.
  2. Select OK if you aren't changing Individual or Business type. The Individual, Trust of Estate screen or the Business or Other Organization screen appears.
  3. Change the name on this screen if you like. The name that appears here doesn't currently do anything - it is NOT the entity name nor the name on reports. You might want to use this name for your notes like "formerly XYC Ltd."
  4. Select OK. The Change Entity Name screen appears
  5. Enter the new entity name. What you enter here is what FN will recognize as the entity name and is also what appears on top of reports.

Notes:

- If you want something other than the entity name to appear on top of a report:

  1. Display the report on the screen
  2. Change the name at the top of the report.
Changing the name affects only the current report. To change the name on all reports, you need to change the entity name.

- Changing the name on reports changes the entity name but does not change the number of entities FN is using, since it still has the same number of entities, just one with a different name. However, when you open data from a different year for the same entity (that still has the old name), FN will no longer recognize the old name. FN asks if you want to add the entity. You normally would add it and open the data. That would temporarily add one more entity to FN's entity list. Then rename the entity to the new name. FN's entity count is back to normal. Because this process uses on of your FN entities temporarily, it is good practice to never use all of the entities you have licensed. For instance, if you have licensed 15 entities, you should have no more that 14 "real" entities. This gives you working room to handle situations like changing entity/report names.

See the topic Changing Entity Name in the Entities and Data Files catogory of the Navigator User Forum.

- There are at least three locations to consider when changing the name at the top of reports:

  • The entity name used by FN.
  • The name at the top of reports (same as entity name).
  • The name of the folders that contain the FN data.

Changing the entity name does not change the folder names. You may want to keep the old name on the old folders
