When we are in one entity and we manually update a stock price, do all other entities get to also use that price or do we have to add it to their pricing file as well?

Updating one security only updates that security in that entity.

However, you can manually edit the price file and use it to automatically update all the securities in one entity. Then use the same file to update all the securities in the next entity. That way you only have to enter the prices once for each symbol. Navigator does not have a built-in editor to do this. Back up you data first. Edit the file apr2.prm with Notepad. Enter prices like
"AMD",17.97,"11/28/2003”
Where “AMD” is the symbol in quotes, 17.97 is the price, “11/28/2008” is the date of the price. Select Investments | Access Prices to Update Securities to automatically update the entity’s portfolio.

A much easier, faster, and more accurate method is to purchase StockWeb or PriceLink. Both of these Navigator add-ons retrieve prices automatically, create the apr2.prn file, and update your portfolios. See www.finnav.com or contact Financial Navigator Customer Service for more information. You only need to run StockWeb or PriceLink once to update prices, but you still need to open each entity and select Investments | Access Prices to Update Securities to automatically update each entity’s portfolio. A future version of Navigator may allow you to update across all entities at once.

A few guidelines:
  • Symbol can be in quotes but usually no reason to do this.
  • Date is required and can be formatted as YYMMDD (leading zeros required) or "M/D/YYYY" (with quotes, leading zeros optional)
  • Security name can optionally appear in quotes after date. That's the way StockWeb does it, but there's no reason for you to do it.
  • Dividends per share can appear after the price (or after security name if used). If dividend unknown, use "-1" (without quotes). Better yet, just leave it out. Navigator Help "Updating Prices with an Externally Created File" says to include the "1" but it is not requried.
The date you use in apr2.prn should match the date you enter in Navigator when prompted for the Valuation Date. However, it doesn't have to match:
  • Both dates must be in the same month and year.
  • If both the month and year don't match, Navigator will ignore it and not update that security.
  • If both the month and year do match, but the day differs, Navigator will use the date in apr2.prn as the valuation date on the A&L Info screen. This can be useful if most securities are priced on a particular day, but a for a few you only have prices from a day or two earlier.
