I am trying to update to the latest test version. I have done this previously without a problem. Now, I can not seem to get it to work. I keep getting a message that says something is wrong with my dial-up connection even when I am connected. Then I get a message that says "WSAError-Network is down" but I am not running on a network. What does this mean?

The network it is refering to the internet network. Whenever computers are connected together that is a network. A local area network (LAN) is the typical network.

"Network is down" is saying the connection between your computer and the other computer is not working. This can be caused by many reasons, but here are the main ones:

1) The connection you have to the internet is not working. Verify this by using your browser and access some website. If you cannot get to the web site then the internect connection is down. Try reconnecting. If it is a dialup connection then hangup and redial. If it is a cable/dsl modem connection then verify the lights on the modem for the line connection. Restart computer. Also you may need to recycle (power off, wait a minute & power back on.) the modem.

2) The Server computer on the other end is currently down. In the case of Financial Navigator, try to access the finnav web site at http://www.finnav.com and see if the server is temporarily down. If so then wait and try it again later.

3) Other problems can occur but trying later or restarting the computer will usually solve the problem.
Also try running software update from another FNI product or from another computer to try to isolate the problem.

1 & 2. Internet connection is working and I am able to access websites, including FN.

3. Restarting computer does not fix. I have been unable to do the update to test mode since I reinstalled FN per Pam instructions last week since I was having a lot of program problems. I ran a thorough scan disk (no errors were detected), uninstalled FN, did a defrag and then reinstalled FN. The only thing I did differently on the reinstall is that I did a minimum as I do not need the sample data. Also now seems like the minimum does not install the help directly though so I may need to reinstall again. Does it need a full installation to do the update? Unfortunatley I do not have another computer to try on. I also was going to try and download directly from the site but I could not find where the update to test mode option was available. Don't know if this helps but when I clink on details of the failed login attempt I get this message:

bLogin Started at 11/14/01 10:05:47 AM

HostName = ftp.finnav.com
HostAddress =
AccessPort = 21
LoginName = anonymous
Password = someone@someplace.com

So I uninstalled and reinstalled FN. I got my help directory back but still can't update to test mode.

I do not know if this helps, but I also sometimes get the following messsage...

ERROR: Unable to initialize FTP Class Module!

"Unable to initialize FTP Class Module!" indicates that you have gotten connected but are unable to setup a File Transfer. (FTP is File Transfer Protocol.)
Since you are on a dial up connection I assume you are not behind a firewall.
What version of Windows are you using?
Are you using Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher?
Are you using AOL?

Did you said that you had done software update before? What was done since you ran software update successfully? What other applications have been installed?

Try accessing the software update thru the help desk.

If you have run software update then the lastest software update file downloaded will still be in the FN program folder. For FN 8.0, this file will be fnwin80x.exe.(fnwin80xt.exe for test version.) Just run it to install this update.
