I have been using stock web for a long time. Suddenly, I can't get past the "transmit" selection.I am connected to the internet before I use stock web. Using stock web, everything occurs normally until I select transmit. Then, the system simply returns me to my desktop. I have reinstalled stock web, but the problem continues. What is wrong? ------------------ m miles

Let's try and isolate the problem. Please answer to following questions:- Have you recently upgraded to Windows 2000 or XP?
- What version of StockWeb are you using? Windows 2000 and Windows XP requires StockWeb Version 2.0.
- Did you recently change browsers? If so, what browser are you using? IE or Netscape.
- Can you use StockWeb outside of the FN program? Double click your StockWeb icon or go to Windows Explorer and locate the file SW.exe and double click. Does the program work then?
- What version of FN are you using?

In answer to your questions: (1) We have not done any upgrades (2) We are using Windows 1998. I have just installed our renewed software agreement. Presumably, these are the most current versions of FN software. (3) There is no change to our browser. We continue to use Microsoft outlook. (4) We can not use Stock Web outside of FN. It is an icon on my desktop. However, I checked our FN files and I do not have an SW.exe file. (5) I am using FN 8.1------------------ m miles

What web browser are you currently using? Internet Explorer, Netscape, or something else? Check to see if this is also the web browser that Stock Web is trying to access. You can do this by:1. In StockWeb, Click on Help | About Navigator StockWeb 2. Note the line that begins with “Browser”. What is this path? (For example it might be: C:\Progra~1\Intern~1\iexplore.exe) 3. In the About Navigator StockWeb screen, press the letter “t” on your keyboard. This will put StockWeb into test mode. Click OK, and then close the About Navigator StockWeb screen. 4. Click on the Transmit button to retrieve prices as you normally would. 5. Please note the message you receive from StockWeb after doing this. What is this message? In addition, have you installed StockWeb into your Financial Navigator program folder? To use StockWeb from within Financial Navigator you must install StockWeb into your FN program folder. In FN, Click on Help | About Financial Navigator and note the path after the line that begins "FNWin.exe:". This will be your Financial Navigator program folder. Make sure you install stockweb into this folder. ---------------------------- George Szundi Technical Support Financial Navigator Int’l [This message has been edited by fni_support (edited 01-24-2003).]

Our browser is Internet Explorer version 5.5. In "about stock web", our path says C:\Windows\Unwise.exe Following your instructions #3 thru #4, the message we receive is, length = 21+35+1+13=70 C:\Windows\Unwise.exe http://www.finnav.com/cgi/sw.cgi?s=A&v=2&d=200401Finally, We install all Financial Navigator products by using the defaults In FN, About Financial Navigator, the path reads: C:\FN\FNWIN81.EXE 10/25/02 We keep all of our application programs in a folder called "FN". We keep all of our data files (entities) in a folder called "FNDATA" You have now exhausted my knowledge of explorer files. None of the above means anything to me. Help? ------------------ m miles

It appears that you do not have a default web browser selected, or your default web browser has somehow reverted to the Windows\Unwise.exe application. To set up Microsoft Internet Explorer as your default browser: 1. Open Internet Explorer. 2. Select Tools | Internet Options 3. Select the Programs tab 4. At the bootom of the screen, check the Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser box. 5. Select OK. 6. Exit Internet Explorer. 7. Open Internet Explorer again. 8. When prompted if you would like to make Internet Explorer your default browser, select Yes. StockWeb should now open Internet Explorer when you transmit your security symbols to the StockWeb Site. These instructions are also found in the Navigator StockWeb Reference Booklet in Appendix C on page 53, “Setting the StockWeb Browser”. You can also search in the Financial Navigator online Help under the topic "Internet Explorer/Setting as your StockWeb browser". ------------------------------ George Szundi Technical Support Financial Navigator Int’l [This message has been edited by fni_support (edited 01-27-2003).]

I have followed the steps above. Now, everytime I go into Internet Explorer, it asks me if I want my Internet Explorer the default browser. I checked About Navigator StockWeb to see what if there had been a change to the Browser path. It is still the same. All of our other software programs work fine, and we have no problem accessing the internet for anything except StockWeb. The StockWeb original problem remains exactly the same. When I select "transmit" the system simply returns me to my desktop. ------------------ m miles

Do you click on Yes when Internet Explorer asks you if you want Internet Explorer to be your default browser? Clicking Yes should set IE as your default browser in Windows. If you haven’t already, please click Yes when prompted to set Internet Explorer as your default browser. If the problem still persists, you may also try the following: Browse to your Financial Navigator folder (c:\FN in your case) and find the file Finnav.html. a. Is there an Internet Explorer icon next to the Finnav.html file name? b. Does Internet Explorer open the file when you double click on it? If not, specify an application to use for opening this file:
1. Highlight the Finnav.html file with a single left mouse click. 2. Hold down the shift button on your keyboard, and right click on the Finnav.html file. 3. From the pop-up menu, select Open with…. 4. From the Open With list, select iexplore. Be sure to also check the Always use this program to open this type of file box at the bottom of this screen, then click Ok. a. Did Finnav.html open in Internet Explorer? b. Does Internet Explorer now launch when you select Transmit in StockWeb? ------------------------------------ George Szundi Technical Support Financial Navigator Int’l

Internet Explorer is already our default browser. Also, our Finnav.html aleady has an internet explorer icon next to the name. If I double click the icon, the file opens and I learn all about FN and where to go for more information.Since all of this was already in place, StockWeb still does not work. ------------------ m miles

In FN's original response to my question, FN asked about the SW.exe file. I am guessing that this is the "application" file for Stock Web. The minute amount of technical knowledge that I think I know about software is that application files need an "exe" as part of the file name. Our SW application file does not have "exe" as part of the file name.I reinstalled Stock Web before contacting FN. Even after the installation, the application file is still called SW. Is it possible that this is the problem? Does it need to be fixed? ------------------ m miles

Your SW application file has an exe as part of it’s name. Since “exe” is a known extension, Windows Explorer only displays “Application” as the file’s type, and does not show you its full file name of “SW.exe”. If you would like to always see your full file names, you can change your Windows Explorer settings to do so:In Windows Explorer: 1. Click on Tools | Folder Options 2. Select the View tab 3. Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types. However, this is not the cause of your problem. StockWeb gets the default browser information directly from Windows. Currently, Windows is tellig StockWeb that your default web browser is c:\windows\unwise.exe rather than Internet Explorer. Let’s try to specify Internet Explorer as the default application to handle htm files. This is a lengthy process so be sure to print this out and follow every step. 1. Open Windows Explorer. 2. Select Tools | Folder Options 3. Click on the File Types tab. 4. From the registered file type list, select HTML Document 5. Click on Edit 6. Verify the following are true: a. Description of Type: HTML Document b. Content Type (MIME): text/html c. Default Extension for Content Type: htm (If htm is not the default extension type, change it to htm) 7. Highlight Open in the list of Actions. 8. Click on Edit. This will bring up the “Editing action for type: HTML Document” screen. 9. Click on Browse. 10. In the “Open With” screen, browse to your Internet Explorer application file. This will most likely be located in the following folder: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\. 11. Select the IEXPLORE application in your Internet Explorer folder and click Open. 12. Verify that the line “Application used to perform action:” now reads ”C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE”. 13. Click Ok to close the “Editing action for type: HTML Document” screen. 14. Please repeat steps 8-13 for the Action Open in same window if it is listed. 15. If Open under the Actions list is NOT bold, select Open and click on Set Default. Note: If Open is already bold, you do not need to click on Set Default. 16. Click on Change Icon if no icon appears and select your Internet Explorer icon. 17. Click on Ok to close the “Edit File Type” screen. 18. Verify that your File Type Details show: a. Extension: HTM HTML b. Content type (MIME): text/html c. Opens with: IEXPLORE 19. Click on Close to close the “Folder Options” screen. If changes to your htm file type were made properly, StockWeb will now read C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Iexplore.exe as your web browser. Run StockWeb and see if this has fixed your problem. ------------------------------------ George Szundi Technical Support Financial Navigator Int’l [This message has been edited by fni_support (edited 01-29-2003).]

I followed the procedures to change stock web to the default browser. I did not have to enter anything because everything already read exactly as you said. I tried stock web again, and it still does not work. I also checked the about stock web and it still has unwise.exe instead of iexplore.------------------ m miles
