We use FN version 8.1. We just upgraded to Windows XP. Because we are a peer to peer network, we always "edit the target" of the second workstation for the sym2.prn file. We add ^/pr=F:\FN at the end of the target.

With Windows XP, our FN application files are now Program Files/FN. When the original edit didn't work, we changed the modification to ^/pr=F:\Program Files\FN.

Neither modification works to allow the second workstation to default to the sym2.prn file on the first workstation. How do we get the peer to peer network to use the first workstation's sym2.prn file?

Hello Margaret.

Is the drive that contains the sym2.prn file mapped on the second workstation? You cannot use the path of ^/pr=F:\Program Files\FN at the end of the target unless the first computer’s drive is shared and mapped to drive F: on the second computer.

For example:

  • Computer A has the sym2.prn file in C:\Program Files\FN
  • You would like Computer B to use Computer A’s sym2.prn file by default.
  • Computer A’s C: drive must be mapped to a virtual F: drive on Computer B. When you add the line /pr=F:\Program Files\FN to your target on Computer B, FN will look for the sym2.prn file in C:\Program Files\FN on Computer A.

In addition, you won't need the “^” symbol before your /pr=F:\Program\Files\FN statement. Your complete target on Computer B should read:
    "C:\Program Files\FN\fnwin81.exe" /pr=F:\Program Files\FN
(Where "C:\Program Files\FN" is where you installed FN on Computer B, F: is the virtual drive that you’ve mapped to Computer A's C: drive)

Before asking the question, we had already mapped the drives (we have been using peer to peer networks for many years). The "^" referred to in our question means space. Are you saying that we don't need a space before the custom edit?

Given that we had already done all of the steps you explained, do you have a different solution?

This particular problem occurs because of WindowsXP's enhanced security features. It has since been resolved with the user.

The solution to this problem was to share the Program Files\FN folder on Computer A. Even though the C: drive had already been shared, added security in WindowsXP still denied access to the Program Files\FN folder.

Note: The above only applies to WindowsXP Pro. The Sharing option is not available for the Documents and Settings, Program Files, and WINDOWS system folders in WindowsXP Home Edition. In addition, you cannot share folders in other user's profiles.

To share any folder on your hard-drive in WindowsXP:

    1. Open Windows Explorer
    2. Browse to the folder your would like to share, C:\Program Files\FN for example.
    3. Right click on the folder you would like to share and Select Sharing and Security…
The folder properties screen now appears, and the Sharing tab should be selected. If it is not, click on the Sharing tab.
    4. Under the “Network Sharing and Security” section, check the box for Share this folder on the network
    5. Type in a new share name or accept the default folder name given.
    6. If you would like other users to change your files, like your symbol file for example, click on Allow network users to change my files

Note: Please click on the Learn more about Sharing and Security link at the bottom of the folder properties screen to read about the security implications of sharing your folder over a network.

    7. Click Apply to accept the changes.
    8. Click Ok to close the folder properties window.
