WE just converted to Windows XP. We use a peer to peer network and share the printer. After installing CheckForm Navigator, we are unable to print checks from any workstation. When we installed checkform on each computer, we selected File LPt1 (1st printer port) using a network for workstation A and workstation B. When we were unable to print checks, we reinstalled checkform and selected LPT1 (1st parallel port) for workstation A. We left workstate B unchanged. We still cannot print checks. What happens is that we go through the complete process for printing checks. At the point where checks should print, nothing happens and the screen is back at the print checks register. The check has disappeared from the print checks register but does show in the enter transaction register. If we stay in the print register and try to look at the entry, we get run time error 5, invalid procedure call or argument. What is wrong with the installation? ------------------ m miles

We have recently become aware that WindowsXP Pro users can have difficulty running CheckForm Navigator if they have installed it under their Program Files folder. In other words, if you’ve installed Financial Navigator (and CFN) in C:\Program Files\FN you could have difficulty printing checks with CFN, even if you have administrator privileges with “full rights” to the folder. This issue only applies to WindowsXP Pro, and does not occur with WindowsXP Home Edition. The current solution is to install Financial Navigator (and all add-on modules) into another folder that is not a sub-directory of the Program Files folder. Most commonly, this would be C:\FN. Once you have installed FN into C:\FN, if your printer is directly connected to your computer via a parallel cable, then you should set CFN to LPT1 (1st Printer Port) when installing it. If you are trying to connect to a network printer, you will have to perform additional steps to capture of the network printer port. These steps are detailed in the post: CFN & WinXP We are investigating the special attributes of the Program Files folder in WindowsXP Pro. If a better solution is discovered, we will update this post. -------------------------------------- George Szundi Technical Support Financial Navigator Int’l

We outsourced our hardware and software installation. Our computer consultant said that Windows XP Pro required all application programs be installed in Program files. Was he mistaken?Do I first uninstall all of the FN software products and then reinstall them in C:\FN? This is where we kept our FN applications on Windows 98. ------------------ m miles

As a user with administrator status you can install applications wherever you like. WindowsXP Pro does not require you to limit your applications to the Program Files folder. In fact, installing to C:\FN eliminates the added security hurdles that are associated with the Program Files folder.Following standard Windows procedures, you can uninstall all of the FN software products and then re-install them to C:\FN. Do this one computer at a time. Start with the computer that is directly connected to the printer through a printer cable if applicable. This will be the easiest computer to set up for CheckForm Navigator. -------------------------------- George Szundi Technical Support Financial Navigator Int’l

I went to the "run" program, entered "command" and typed net use \\mmiles\hplj5p. This allows us to print checks on computer A but not computer B on our peer to peer network.Using Windows XP Pro, how do we get checks to print from both computers? ------------------ m miles

Since posting my last question, I went to the "run" program, typed "command" and at the prompt, I typed, net use lpt1 \\mmiles\hplj5p This command was accepted. I then typed, net use. It showed that it was ok.Next, I went to our second computer, computer B. I checked the printer for its name. Under properties, the only description of the printer, under any of the tabs is hplj5p. However, the description of the shared printer (not under properties) is Mmiles. Next, I went to the "run" program and typed "command". Then I typed, net use lpt1 \\mmiles\hplj5p. It said that the command was accepted. Then I tried to print a sample check from computer B and the program would not allow me to enter any transactions, print checks etc. I closed FN and did a warm reboot. Before it began, it said I was still running a task. I said to end the task and then the computer rebooted. Next, I went to the "run" program. At the prompt, I typed net use. It showed two devices. The first device is N: \\Mmiles\c. The second device, lpt1 \\hplj5p, is not available. Net use continues with "local device has a remembered connection to another network resource." (Note "N" is the drive computer B uses for shared data files on computer A.) Is there a way to get computer B to print checks? ------------------ m miles
