I am currently running FN8.1 on my computer at work. I am going to get a new computer next week; are there any system files I need to transfer to make the transition seamless? Thanks, FN_User

There are several files you might want to transfer to your new computer.- Sym2.prn - this is your symbol file for your marketable investments. - FNwin.ini - this file stores the information on window sizes. It is not critical if it is not transferred. If you have Bank Link: - BK10bnt.bnt - Account numbers are stored in this file If you have Broker Link: - BL10bnt.bnt - Account numbers are stored in this file All of the above files are located in the FN program folder. If you have CheckForm Navigator, and have fine tuned the positon of the MICR codes, also copy fnchkf1.des and fnchkf2.des in the FN program folder.Note: Most FN settings are stored in files in the FN program folder or in the folders with each entity's data. So if your computer is on a network, and has a Workstation install of FN, you don't need to worry about copying files. - David FNI Support

Here is a step-by-step process to move or copy your FN settings to a new computer. It is easy to “clone” a Navigator installation from one computer to another by following the steps below. This process assumes: - All computers are running Windows XP. Other operating systems may have Windows files in different locations.
- You are doing a Full Installation on the second computer. If the second computer is a Workstation Install on the office network, there is no need for this process, since it runs Navigator of the server and everyone uses the same settings.
- You have purchased a License Extension for the second computer and have a separate Product Key for the second computer.
- The second computer has access to the Navigator data. This could be through a VPN connection, Windows Remote Desktop, or “sneaker net” where the data is transferred via floppy disk or USB drive. Note that each of these methods has significant security and data integrity issues. If you have not already done so, have your IT staff review your setup with the Financial Navigator Technicians.
There is an alternative to this cloning process. We call it Navigator Online. With Navigator Online, there is no need to install a separate copy of Navigator on the remote computer. Any computer with Internet access can connect to your server and view and enter Navigator data.
To clone Navigator: - Close Navigator if it is running.
- Copy the Navigator program folder and all its contents from the original computer or server to the second “clone” computer. Typically this folder is C:\Program Files\FN\. If this is a network installation, the program folder is on the server. If this is a standalone computer, the program folder is of course on that computer.
- Copy C:\Windows\fnwin.ini from the original computer to the same location in the second “clone” computer. Note that if you have multiple computers in the office (as Workstation Installs), each one has its own C:\Windows\fnwin.ini file and user settings.
- Install or reinstall Navigator on the second computer. This step installs and registers the required windows library files and creates a desktop shortcut. Be sure to install Navigator to the same folder you used in Step 2.
- Start Navigator on the second computer.
- Enter the second Product Key when prompted and follow the steps to activate it.
- Perform Software Update on the second computer to get the latest version of Navigator.
- Repeat Steps 4-7 for each add-on product.
- Test the installation by opening your data.
File types The cloning process copies the files that are unique to your installation and therefore not included on the installation CD. Some of these custom files are listed below. A complete list of the files each program uses is in the appendix of each manual and in online Help.- fnwin.ini – user settings for each computer. Located at C:\Windows\.
- sym2.prn – List of security symbols for all entities. Located in the FN program folder.
- *.aqt – Qualifier Tables for each entity. Located in the FN program folder.
- *.opt – Customized reports for each entity (or entity family for Advanced Reports). Located in the FN program folder.
