I have Navigator Personal Edition on a single computer. I got a new computer and would like to move Navigator to the new computer. We don't have a network, nor a server, nor an Internet conneciton. What's the best way to do this?

To move Navigator to a new computer:
  1. Optional but recommended: Copy the Navigator program file folder from the old computer to the new computer. Typically, that folder is C:\Program Files\FN\. Copying the folder helps keep some of your settings. It also has your Symbol File sym2.prn and other data that is nice to keep.
  2. Copy the Navigator data folder(s) from the old computer to the new computer. Often users place the folders in the Navigator program file folder, but we recommend putting them in a separate folder, perhaps C:\FNdata\. This may be a good time to make the change.
  3. Optional: Create a folder for backups. We suggest C:\FNbackups\.
  4. Do a Full Installation of Navigator on the new computer using the CD. If you don't have the CD, the install file is at http://finnav.com/CR/software.html. Install to the same folder that you copied, typically C:\Program Files\FN\. When Navigator starts, it will ask for a Product Key. Don't enter it yet.
  5. Call FNI Installation Support 650 962-0300 x2015 M-F 7:30 AM-4:30 PM. Have both computers on. We will manually deactivate Navigator on the old computer.
  6. Enter the Product Key on the new computer. This is the same key that was on the old computer.
  7. If the new computer is on the Internet, choose Activate by Internet. If not, choose Activate by Telephone and we will manually activate it while we are on the phone with you.
  8. Perform Software Update.
  9. Open your data to verify it works.

If your new computer has Windows Vista and is the only computer Navigator will be on (not on a network & server), I recommend putting the data (and backups) in your Documents folder instead of the C:\FNdata. The reason is that Vista tries to improve security by hiding data files that you try to put data in the Program Files folder and possibly on the root C:\. By putting your data in your Documents folder, it will be easy to find and work with.

However, if other users are going to log in with a different name on your computer, they will have a hard time finding your data. If multiple users need the data, leave it at C:\FNdata.
