A week ago, I paid my Annual Maintenance fee for my Desktop (Dell running Vista Ultimate) and added a Laptop Extension (Lenovo running Vista Ultimate). Two new Product (Activation) Keys were received by email and installed; the transition on the Desktop and addition to the Laptop worked smoothly. I was able to work at my Desktop and (when away from the Desktop) at my Laptop, then synchronize FN Data files between the Desktop and the Laptop. Backups were done with a thumb drive; synchronization was with Laplink software.

This morning at the Desktop, when I clicked the FN Icon, instead of taking me to FN Data, FN opened in, I think, program files. I went to the root drive, C:\ , and eventually, through User to Documents to FN Data and clicked on an entity that I used just yesterday and got the message: “The entity is not currently on the entity list.” Rather than use up an entity, I decided to seek help.

Turning to my Laptop, where the Extension is installed, I find that FN still works properly. The Laptop’s FN Data was synchronized with my Desktop’s FN Data last night.

Synchronization was done with Laplink. I specify that the only FN files to be synchronized are FN Data files. The entity names are the same on both Desktop and Laptop machines.

While it should not have a bearing on this issue, my 10-year old IBM ThinkPad recently had a hard-drive failure and a new hard drive was installed by a computer repair/service firm. In the process of replacing the old hard-drive, the firm restored most of my old files. I used Laplink software to restore and synchronize Desktop files with the IBM Laptop. Many years ago, I could run early versions of FN (Version 7?) on that old Laptop. Current FN (Version 8.2) data could not run on that IBM Laptop because I didn’t have a license or authorization key for it. When Laplink is used to synchronize files between computers, specific folders are identified for synchronization and transfer. And the direction of the transfer can be controlled. Unless Laplink software has a stealth feature, I am highly confident that Laplink did not touch the Desktop’s program files - but since I don’t know what has happened, I thought this should be mentioned.

For the time being, FN will be used from the Lenovo Laptop. When the Desktop is restored, I’ll transfer or synchronize files from the Laptop back to the Desktop.

Your help in getting my Desktop back to speed would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like Vista is hiding some files. Please review these Forum posts. You may want to reinstall Navigator in C:\FN\

Installation

Windows Vista
