The steps below show you how to move Navigator to a new server. If you are looking for instructions how to move Navigator from a single computer (not a server) to a new computer, see Cloning single computer install.

These instructions are for the Full Install of Navigator. Note that desktop computers connected to the server via an office network have a Workstation Install and do not require these steps. If you have a new desktop computer on the network, simply do a Workstation Install of Navigator. No cloning, Activation, or Software Update is necessary. However, the new computer needs to be configured properly before you install Navigator. See Setting up a new workstation.

I'm assuming you no longer need to run Navigator on the old server. If you need Navigator on two servers, for instance at two offices, contact us for a License Extension and a second Product Key.

To move Navigator to a new server:

  1. Set up folders on the new server for the Navigator programs, data, and backups. This might be a good time to review how your directories are set up. See Installing Financial Navigator – Suggested Folders.
  2. Map network drive on the workstations. Probably use the same drive letter you used before. Change the path to the new server. If you have separate drive letters for the Navigator program folder and the data folder, map both. If the new server has the same name as the old server and the directory structure did not change, you can skip this step. See "Mapping network drives on each workstation" in Navigator Help or the printed Reference Guide.
  3. Copy the contents of the Navigator program folder from the old server to the new server. This step is not required, but it preserves many of the settings that users would otherwise have to reenter so is highly recommended.
  4. Copy the folders with the old BrokerLink and BankLink download files. These are normally named "BrokerLink" and "BankLink" and are normally in the Navigator program folder so you already copied them when you copied the Navigator program folder. (Optional)
  5. Copy the file finwin.ini from C:\Windows\. This file has settigns like screen sizes and user name. (Optional)
  6. Copy the Navigator data folders and backup folders from the old server to the new server.
  7. Do a Full Installation of Navigator on the new computer using the CD. Do this installation from one of the workstations, not the server. Install to the mapped drive that has the Navigator programs. When Navigator starts, it will ask for a Product Key. Don't enter it yet.
  8. Call FNI Installation Support 650 962-0300 x2015 M-F 7:30 AM-4:30 PM. Have both servers on. We will walk you through manually deactivating Navigator on the old computer.
  9. Enter the Product Key on the new computer. This is the same Key that was on the old computer.
  10. If the new computer is on the Internet, choose Activate by Internet. If not, choose Activate by Telephone and we will manually activate it while we are on the phone with you.
  11. Perform Software Update.
  12. Repeat steps 5-9 for each Financial Navigator product you license, for instance Advanced Reports and PriceLink.
  13. Open your data in Navigator to verify everything works.

Step 3 above recommends copying the Navigator data folder to the new computer. One reason for this is so that settings and other files that are not part of the data are preserved. Most of those files are listed below. You probably don't need this information, since copying the program folder takes care of it. But if you are curious:
  • Qualifier tables (.aqt file)
  • Broker Link settings and accounts (.blo files)
  • BankLink settings and accounts (.bko files)
  • Check setup info (.des and .chk files)
  • Entity Families (fnwin.efn file - not used in 9.0)
  • Entity list (.ent file)
  • Report options, recently used file list, screen settings (.opt files)
  • Symbol list (sym2.prn file)
