I have Navigator installed on the server. It runs fime on my desktop, but when I try to open help, I get "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropiate permissions to access the item."

Windows security is trying to protect you. Your security settings do not allow you to open a potentially dangerous file over your office intranet. You know that the Navigator help file is safe to use. There are two workarounds:

Method 1 - Copy files to desktop

  1. Open Windows Explorer. (Start | My Computer).
  2. Browse to the Navigator program folder.
  3. Copy any or all of the files below to your desktop or a folder on your computer. You will only have files for the products you have installed:

    • activate.chm - Product Activation help
    • advrep.chm - Advanced Reports help (Use advreproi.chm instead if you have both Advanced Reports & Navigator ROI)
    • advreproi.chm - Advanced Reports & Navigator ROI help
    • banklink.chm - BankLink help
    • broklink.chm - BrokerLink 8.2 help
    • brokkinksql.chm - BrokerLink 9.0 help
    • cfnsetup.chm - CheckForm help
    • naccess.chm - PriceLink help
    • roi.chm - Navigator ROI help (Use advreproi.chm instead if you have both Advanced Reports & Navigator ROI)
    • sw.chm - StockWeb help

Note that Navigator 8.2 is not listed. It uses fnwin.hlp, which is an older technology, and surpisingly works without these special steps.
Method 2 - Change security settings

This method potentially is a secruity risk, however small. Check with your IT department before proceeding. See "Publisher could not be verified" security warning when starting Navigator for the steps to tell Windows to trust your server.
