Hello,

We recently upgraded a user to Windows 2000 and set her up as a restricted user. Restricted users do not have the ability to install new programs or modify settings contained in .ini files.

This user has experienced a couple of problems that lead me to believe she does not have sufficient permission to her .ini files in Financial Navigator 8. For example, she has unchecked the reminder about backing up upon exit, but the option does not stay unchecked. However, when selecting this option as the system administrator, the option stays unchecked. As another example, in CFN she is unable to open an existing check format file (the .chk file, I think) to use it as a template for a new file.

I assume if I change the properties for the .ini files such that the user has full control over those files, the system will work normally again. Is that correct? What files specifically do I need to ensure the user can modify?

Thank you.

(By the way, you need to update your web site. If you have recently changed your tech support policy and no longer accept problem submissions via email, you might remove the option called "Send e-mail to FNI's Technical Support Team" from the page http://www.finnav.com/products/fn/fn80/helpdesk.htm)

Yes, the users does need to be able to store current settings in the fnwin.ini file in the windows folder on the workstation. So the user does need permission to write to the file fnwin.ini. One of the settings is the option to remind to backup data files.

As for the CFN unable to open an existing check format file, that sounds like a different problem. Make sure that the workstation install for CFN has been completed on this workstation. Otherwise, look at the detail message that is displayed when the problem occurs. Review the CFN forum for other solutions already posted there. If the solutions is not available please post a message on the CFN forum
