How do you change the default file location to open in Navigator?

Right now it's opening data on the local machine, I want to force it to always go to the network share for the data.

There are a number of ways to get Navigator 8.2 and earlier to open a default file. Navigator 9.0 is different, scroll down for 9.0 instrutions. Also see How do I start FN with most-used data files?.

To specify file with which Navigator Version 8.2 (and earlier) starts:

  1. Open last-used file: In Navigator, select Options | Open Recently Used File. A check mark means Navigator will start at the data it was on when it was last closed.
  2. Open same file every time: Right-click on the desktop icon you use to start Navigator. Select Properties | Shortcut. Add the path to the desired file after the target.
Notes:
  • The target is in quotes if there are spaces in the path.
  • Put a space between the target and the path to the default data.
  • No quotes are needed in the path to the data.
  • All paths should use mapped drives.
  • Do not put default data path in Start in text box. That works for many other programs, and appears to work with Navigator, but will cause other parts of the Financial Navigator suite not to work.
  • Start in has only the path to the navigator program folder. It shouldn't be necessary to change it.
  • Start in often has "Progra~1" instead of "Program Files". Doesn't matter, they are equivalent.
Example from Target text box:
   "F:\Program Files\FN\fnwin82.exe" F:\FNData\Dewey & Vera Goode\Dewey & Vera Goode_03

Example from Start in text box:
   F:\PROGRA~1\FN

  1. Open a data folder every time: Instead of specifying the complete path including the entity-year data folder, just use the path to the folder that contains the data folders you use every day.
Example from Target text box:
   "F:\Program Files\FN\fnwin82.exe" F:\FNData\Dewey & Vera Goode\
or
   "F:\Program Files\FN\fnwin82.exe" F:\FNData\

Note: Sometimes, for reasons I haven't been able to deduce, Navigator doesn't open the data or folder you expect when using these paths in the Target. Play with the path until you get the result you want.

Sometimes Navigator will display the desired path to the folder that contains the data folders you use every day in the Enter drive and folder for data text box. But the Folders tree in the box below displays folders for the next level up. Try using a path with a non-existent folder to force Navigator to open the next folder level down:

   "F:\Program Files\FN\fnwin82.exe" F:\FNData\Dewey & Vera Goode\Dummy

To specify entity with which Navigator Version 9.0 (and later) starts:

  1. Open last-used entity: In Navigator, select Options | Open Recently Used Entity. A check mark means Navigator will start at the entity that it was on when it was last closed.
  2. Open same file every time: Right-click on the desktop icon you use to start Navigator. Select Properties | Shortcut. Add the entity name after the target.
Notes:
  • The target is in quotes if there are spaces in the path.
  • Put a space between the target and the entity name.
  • No quotes are needed or allowed around the entity name.
  • Do not put entity name in Start in text box. That works for many other programs, but may cause other parts of the Financial Navigator suite not to work.
  • Start in has only the path to the navigator program folder. It shouldn't be necessary to change it.
