A 26 character limit is too small for the payee area. I find that half of my payees are over this character limit. For example, today I needed to add a new payee of: Environmental Control Associates, Inc. I print checks for clients out of FN and it looks very unprofessional to have to truncate this to 26 characters on a check. A 40 character limit would be more realistic.------------------ ahgatto

There has been no response by anyone at FN on this so I am wondering if this is being considered. 40-50% of the payees I deal with have names longer than 26 characters. I know I am not the only one with this problem since there was post on this by another user in one of the other forums. ------------------ ahgatto

A very good workaround already exists. This is fully described at the topic Check Printing.Since that topic is a long one with many replies, I'll summarize here. The payee name is limited to 26 characters. The name in Address Information can be as long as 40 characters.
- Use an abbreviated payee name, antything up to 26 characters. This will appear on all your reports but NOT your checks.
- Use the longer version in the address information field, anything up to 40 characters. Access this by selecting Transactions | Info for Name & Address. The only place this will appear is on checks.
- If desired, change the check print settings so that the abbreviated payee name doesn't appear on the check. Refer to the topic Payee name vs. name on check for details on how to do this.
- If desired, choose the correct check format so that the name (from Info for Name & Address) prints adjacent to the "Pay to the order of" printed on the check.
I personally have been using this technique for over 10 years for many sets of data files. It works beautifully. ------------------ Renée Trudeau Financial Navigator Int'l Manager, Technical Services

Hmmm. I must be missing something. I followed your link to check printing. I had read that topic before and agree with that user that it is not a viable solution to have a blank payee field even though he full name and address are below on the check. Is there a solution to getting the full name to print in the payee field and the full name and address to print in the proper section for the window envelopes that I am missing? The FN recommended check style is Deluxe 81004 which is what I am currently working with. Also, in that check printing post it was mentioned that lengthening the payee field was being considered by FN. Is it still being considered? ------------------ ahgatto

No, you are not missing something. I understand that a blank payee line is not a viable solution for you. If you change the check settings as indicated in the "Payee name vs. name on check" instructions, then the entire name and address field is moved up to the payee line. This solves your payee name issue but then, your window envelopes will not match up with the checks. These are the only check setting options available at this time. Lengthening the payee field IS being considered and is on the list of suggested enhancements. Again, we appreciate your suggestions and will let you know when the enhancement is in place.
