Regarding the response to my post Venture Capital Investments, I request that there be a way to post capital contribution transactions to a Venture Capital Investment without having to "buy" shares. You allow us to have a "return of capital" with 0 shares on a sell. Can you also give us a capital contribution with 0 shares on a buy?

My end result is that I want to affect the cost basis without having to manually change share balances or cost basis. Venture Capital rarely deals with shares.

The other option would be to make a new format type for Venture Capital Investments which would allow the cost basis to be adjusted with each transaction but would not require a buy or sell of shares.

If you are not interested in number of shares and repricing the balance to market value, then just keep the balance at cost. Any money added to the account will increase the balance. Any fund withdrawal will decrease the balance. Use another format type such as investment Receivable.

If you do want a way to show appreciation of the investment, then create an appreciation account. Use this appreciation account for any change in market value. This way the cost and the appreciation will be tracted separately.

Another workaround option would be to put your Venture Capital Fund accounts in the Chart of Accounts under the Asset Class, Marketable Investments Group, and Other Marketable Investments Category.

Then change the Asset and Liability format type to Miscellaneous (1). You would no longer need to "buy" or "sell" positions for capital contributions or distributions.

This will give you the correct balance on the Cost Basis Balance Sheet report.

However, you would not get that account on your Securities Portfolio Analysis report.
If you need to have the account on a securities report, then you will have to continue using the "buy" "sell" option with a marketable investment format type 7-11. See Investment Entries

This post is meant as strong support for FN USER's request from 11/28/01.

Changing formats seems to me a temporary remedy only. Venture Capital funds are investments after all and should be treated as such. To post capital contributions using a purchase of zero shares as FN USER requests would be much more preferable.

Can we expect this enhancement to the program in the near future?
