I got the following message:
Bad file name or number (Error # 52) in line 50600 using file: H:\FN Data\2000\TRN2.DAT

The program also runs slow and when I try to put entries in the computes it closes down. What do I do to correct things? I did run test & correct files utility.

Any help is appreciated.

Bob

First, what version are you running?

If it is 7.5 then run software update to make sure you are running the latest version 7.5.3. If not then use software update to download and install the lastest version.

If it is 7.0 then make sure you are running the latest version 7.0.4. If not then download it from the website at ftp://www.finnav.com/ftp/fnwin70x.exe Save it in the fn program folder. Run fnwin70x.exe to expand it into fnwin70.exe.

It is likely the lastest version of 7.5 will correct the problem. If not then see if you can consistently reproduce the problem. See if the error occurs if you go directly to transactions. Also try to run a report within transaction activity.
Please let us know if you can reproduce the problem with the lastest version of FN.

As for FN running slow, run scandisk and defrag to insure the hard drive is working properly. Adding more memory is one of the easiest and cheapest ways of improving performance for all windows programs. Running fewer windows programs at the same time will also help. Restarting windows will help if programs have crashed or lost memory. If you are running on a peer-to-peer network such as Windows NT then moving the data and programs to the workstation will improve performance.

I have a WIN 2000 OS system, Celeron 600, with 128 MB RAM, I am running FIN Navigator 8.0.7 but I receive this error # 52 about 1 of every 3 times I backup file to a floppy. File that creats the problem is IAC2.dat during backup to floppy... Any suggestions of how to correct this nuisance ????

Let's try to isolate when the 1 out 3 times the problem occurs.

When the problem occurs do it consistently occur until you exit FN and rerun FN?

When the problem occurs, if you exist FN and rerun FN does the problem always not occur?

Is there some activity such as a report, or entering transactions, or add a new account that was done when the problem occurs?

The IAC2.dat file is the account index file. Is is updated when an account is added or the name is changed. Also this is probably the 2nd file that is trying to be copied.

Try copying the data files to another folder on the hard drive when the problem occurs.

Also are the data files in the FN folder? Or a folder relative to FN? Try opening the data files so the full path is showing in the title bar such as "C:\FN\data" instead of just "data".

Let me know what you find out.

With this has come aproblem with transaction entry the drop-down boxes do not align properly..

The last item you mention, "a problem with transaction entry the drop-down boxes do not align properly." is totally a different unrelated issue. (It is best to post that as a separate topic.)
This is usually caused by an older version of the windows library file ss32x25.ocx. Sometimes this happens when another application is installed and does not do version checking.

Solution is to reinstall the windows library files from FN Cd. Select Custom install and uncheck all but the windows library files.

Also see Transaction Entry display problems.

Back to the error# 52 problem.

Still sounds like it occurs inconsistantly.

Try opening your data files so the full path is displayed in the title bar and not the relative path. For example open the data files so it shows "c:\fn\data" instead of just "data".

What did you do to correct the IAC2.dat problem?
Describing what you did to correct the problem may help others with the same problem.
Thanks.
