We have a CD-rom read-write now and would like to backup to a CD, however, the software will not let me. I have also used a 'create a data CD' (from a software I can't think of the name) and when I go to open the file on the CD, it says error #75 Path/file access error. What am I doing wrong?

From the CD-RW software you should be able to select files and folders to write onto the the cd. This is same process for any other files. Now the files will be written onto the cdrom.

Opening the files on a cdrom is a problem since the files will be read-only. The files are updated when they are accessed to show the last time used. So the files must be copies off the cdrom to the hard drive in order to be accessed.

John,
I don't understand the second paragraph, specifically the last sentence. How do I view the data on the cdrom?
This is all new to me, I apologize.

After the files are copied on to the cdrom, they will not be able to be write to the cdrom by another program such as FN. They must be copies back to the hard drive to be used. The cdrom can only be written to once by the CD-RW software. After the cdrom is burned then the files are read-only.

I'm still lost. I believe I understand why I can't write to the cdrom from FN, but if I backup FN from the cdrom software, how can I then read it later? Can you give me the procedure step by step so that I can read from the cdrom?

The cdrom is not like a floppy disk, a zip disk or even a hard drive. It can only be written to once using special CD-RW software that burns the files onto the cdrom. After that the files can be read but not written to. In Windows Explorer, try copying any file to a cdrom.

Hope this helps. Also you may find some better writeups in the manual or help file that came with your CD-RW drive and software.

Windows XP simplifies writing to a CD. You do not have to have seperate "CD burning" software.

If you have Windows XP:

  1. Select Run | Help and Support to access Windows Help.
  2. Search for "CD"
  3. Select Copy files and folders to a CD.
  4. Review the instructions that are displayed.
Note: When you want to restore the backed-up Navigator data from the CD, you may need to turn off "read only" in the folder or data attributes. But that's a topic for another post.
