I subscribe to MorningStar's Principia services for my investments. Each month they send me CDs. But as soon as I install the CDs, Navigator acts strange: the data entry line floats up a few lines. The only cure I have found is to reinstall Navigator every month. Is there as fix for this?

Henry:

Thank you for bringing this problem to our attention. We have duplicated the problem and found that the CDs MorningStar sends have an older control file than the one Navigator uses. We are working with MorningStar to get a permanent fix, meanwhile here is an easy solution: Find the problem files and make shortcuts to them on your desktop. Then, every month after installing the MorningStar CDs, replace the old file with the new file. Problem solved!

You will be working with your Windows system folders. You can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall Windows. We cannot guarantee that problems resulting from following these steps can be solved. Use this at your own risk.

The instructions below are for Windows XP. If you have a different operating system, the steps may be slightly different. Once you have set up the desktop shortcuts, it takes only a second to restore the file each month.

If you prefer, you can still simply reinstall Navigator each month instead of using the steps below. You don't need to install the whole program, just select Custom then uncheck everything except Windows library files (DLLs) on the next screen.

If you have any questions, please reply to to this topic.

If any other Navigator users are reading this and using MorningStar's Principa, please contact us at customerservice@finnav.com so that we can notify you when there is a permanent solution.

To find the files:

  1. Select Start | Search.
  2. Select All Files or Folders.

  3. Enter ss32x25.ocx in the All or part of the file name text box.
  4. Select More Advanced Options.
  5. Select Search hidden files and folders.
  6. Select Search.
  7. Look at the list of folders. Write down two of the folders:
    • The folder that has your Navigator program. By default, it is C:\Program Files\FN\ and that may be where your Navigator program (and ss32x25.ocx) is.
    • The Windows folder that MorningStar's uses for their ss32x25.ocx file. On Windows XP and Windows 2000, it may be C:\WINDOWS\system32.
To make a desktop shortcut to the new file:
  1. Select Start | My Computer.
  2. Browse to your Navigator program folder that you found in the steps above, something like C:\Program Files\FN\.
  3. Select the file ss32x25.ocx.
  4. Hold down the right mouse button and drag the file to your desktop.
  5. Release the right mouse button.
  6. Select Copy Here. You now have a copy of the new ss32x25.ocx file on your desktop.
To make a desktop shortcut to your Windows folder:
  1. Select Start | My Computer.
  2. Browse to your Windows folder that you found in the steps above, something like C:\WINDOWS\system32.
  3. Go up one level. If your Windows folder is C:\WINDOWS\system32, browse to C:\WINDOWS\.
  4. Select the folder that has the MorningStar's file. If your Windows folder is C:\WINDOWS\system32, the folder is system32.
  5. Hold down the right mouse button and drag the folder to your desktop.
  6. Release the right mouse button.
  7. Select Create Shortcut Here. You now have a shortcut to the folder with the problem MorningStar's file on your desktop.

Now you are done setting things up. Each month all you need to do now is update the file.

To update the file after installing the MorningStar's CD:

  1. Select the ss32x25.ocx icon on your desktop.
  2. Hold down the right mouse button and drag the file to the folder shortcut on your desktop. If your Windows folder is C:\WINDOWS\system32, the shortcut is named system32.
  3. Release the right mouse button.
  4. Select Copy Here. The Confirm File Replace screen appears.
  5. Select Yes to update the file.
