I have exactly 10 entities, one of which is
called stocks. They are still listed in
my current directory, as well as in the
Archive directory. However, when I click on
them to open them, they claim to not be an
entity - and indicate I already have 10
entities so cannot add. When I looked at
the entity list, I see an old entity,
Carolyn Enterprises. I therefore, went
to the deleting entites section to copy instructions for how to delete this old
entity.

When I tried to follow the instructions,
I selected Sample Data Files, to open them,
and they indicated there were no files on
the Sample Data location. I didn't know
what to do next - so came to you.

#1 - How do I get rid of the Carolyn Enterprises entity
#2 - where are my stock entity folders which
are in the computer, but the folders are
empty?

Thanks for your assistance.

Carolyn Masi

Carolyn:

Thanks for your questions. It sounds like you have a number of problems.

First, we recommend that you always have at least one spare entity to make situations like this easier to handle. Contact Financial Navigator Customer Service to purchase 5 more entities. With 15 entities, you can safely work with 14 “real” entities leaving one as a spare.

For your first question, verify that you can open your sample data and view transactions. The sample data is in a folder Sample in your Navigator program file folder, which is probably C:\Program Files\FN\. The entity name for the sample data is Dewey & Vera Goode. The sample data does not count as one of your 10 entities, so you can always open it.

Deleting an entity in Navigator also deletes the associated data. Because of that, it is always a good practice to back up your data first.

Do you have a copy of your old Carolyn Enterprises data somewhere? If so, copy that folder to your Navigator data folder, open any other entity in Navigator, and select File | Delete Entity to delete Carolyn Enterprises. Navigator will ask you to browse to the Carolyn Enterprises data folder, then it will delete the entity from the entity list and delete the data folder and the data itself.

If you no longer have any Carolyn Enterprises data, you have to make a data folder that Navigator thinks is Carolyn Enterprises. You do that by copying the Sample data folder, renaming the entity from Dewey & Vera Goode to Carolyn Enterprises, and then deleting Carolyn Enterprises in Navigator. See Deleting Entities for details. See also Unused entity - won't let me use it for more information.

You can avoid these extra steps if you remember to delete an entity you are no longer using from within Navigator, not by simply deleting the file folder. Since Navigator will delete the data, also remember to make a backup first.

For your question #2, it sounds like the Stock entity folder is still in your current directory. Once you free up one an entity by deleting Carolyn Enterprises from the Navigator entity list you can add the Stock entity. Navigator will say “Stock is not on the entity list, do you want to add it?” to which you will respond “Yes, please.”

You say the Stock folders are empty. Hopefully, that is not the case. If there are indeed no files in the Stock folders, you have a problem. Perhaps someone tried earlier to delete Stock form the entity list in Navigator, and Navigator dutifully deleted it along with the data. In any case, if the folders are empty, you need to find a backup and copy the Stock folders from the backup to your Navigator data directory. If you do not have a backup, there isn’t any magic way to get the data back.

Please reply to this topic and let us know if everything worked or if you have any questions.

Thanks for the great information. Following
your instructions I was able to delete the
additional (nonexistent) entity through the
sample file and - my old files were still
there. SUCCESS -

Thanks so much Financial Navigator!!!
