I backed up my FN data onto a CD. But now I can't access them--I get an error message when I try to open the files.

Navigator updates the data every time you open the data folders. This requires writing to the files. Because your data is on a CD, and because CDs are read-only, Navigator cannot use data on a CD.

The solution is easy: copy the data from the CD to your hard drive.

To copy the data from the CD:

  1. Open the CD in Windows Explorer.
  2. Open your Navigator FN data folder in a second Windows Explorer screen.
  3. Drag the folder containing your FN data from the CD to the FN data folder on your hard drive.
Note: If the FN data on your CD is just loose files (about 15-20, mostly .dat files), you need to first create a folder to hold the files in your FN data folder. We suggest always backing up data into a folder with the entity name and year, just like it is stored in the FN data folder.

Often one more step is required. Even though the files are now on your hard drive, they may still be flagged as "read only" and Navigator cannot write to them.

To make the files writable:

  1. Open the Navigator FN data folder in Windows Explorer.
  2. Right click on the folder containing the FN data you just copied from the CD.
  3. Select Properties.
  4. Select Read-only if it is not already clear. You may have to select it more than once until the check box is empty.
  5. Select OK
