For security, I keep the data for one entity only on a floppy diskette. Now I can’t read the data. Help!

I tried copying it to my hard drive and get the error message “Can’t copy trn2. Can not read from source file or disk.”

Sounds like the diskette may be damaged or the data corrupted. Unlike some files that can be rebuilt, the trn2.dat file has your transactions and your only hope is to recover that file.

Copy the files that you can to your hard drive, then try the suggestions below. Be aware that there is always the risk that the repair may further damage the disk. We offer these suggestions with that caveat; we cannot take any responsibility for the results.

  • Review the Forum posts Accessing Data From Discs Continued and Error #57 - Disk Transfer. Some of the best suggestions from those posts are listed below.
  • Try reading the diskette on different floppy disk drive and/or on another computer.
  • Try doing a diskcopy of the bad floppy diskette to another diskette. Sometimes a diskcopy will be able to copy the disk.
  • Run scandisk on the floppy disk. Sometimes it can fix the diskette.
  • There are many software programs and companies that may be able to repair floppies. Search the Internet, or ask you IT department or local computer guru.

Floppy diskettes do wear out eventually and should not be your only copy of important data. In the early days of Financial Navigator, writing to floppies was a necessary task. Now there are better alternatives.

Navigator works faster when the data is accessing in on a hard drive. If you are worried about the privacy of that data, password protect the entity-year it in Navigator. You can add an additional levels of protection by using Navigator’s User Profiles and/or encrypting the data using Windows.

For offsite backups or transporting the data to another location, consider using USB thumb drives. These thumb-size devices can hold much more than a floppy, are slightly more reliable, and are now reasonably priced. Some even have built-in encryption for another layer of security.
