I don’t understand the Market Value column on the Securities Portfolio Analysis. I have the following situation: - There is a balance in the account because these books are kept on the cost basis (i.e. we don’t update the balance to market value). Balance = cost basis = $10,000 - The market value per share equals zero (the stock has become worthless) I want the Market Value to appear as zero (market price per share x number of shares). However, the amount from the Balance column appears with the Market Value column, with a B next to it, and the notation below, “Market Value – B = Balance.” How do I get the Market Value to equal market price per share x number of shares rather than the balance?

Any time the balance in the account does not equal the price x quantity then either a B or a P will be indicated. (This is true whether or not the Calculate option is set to show market value on the balance sheet.)
- B = Balance meaning the balance is shown
- P = Price x Qty meaning the price x qty is shown.
When these indicators show up, and how the Market Value is calculated on the Securities Portfolio Analysis report, depends mostly on timing, as described below. quote: From the Financial Navigator Help system, topic name Marketable Securities Report Fields Market Value—The balance in the account as of the report month, if this amount equals Price x Quantity. If the amount does not equal Price x Quantity, one of the following notes appear:
- P — Indicates that the Report Month is the same or more recent than the Date Valued. In this case, the system assumes that Price is correct, so it calculates the Market Value by multiplying Price x Quantity. This allows you to enter a new price per share and have the report calculate the balance.
- B — Indicates that the Report Month is earlier than the month of the Date Valued. In this case, the system assumes that the balance in the account for the Report Month is correct. “B” also appears if either Price or Quantity are zero.
In order for the Securities Portfolio Analysis to properly show the Market Value column equal to Market Price x number of shares,
- You must be sure that the Report Month is the same or more recent than the date valued.
- Neither the Price nor the Quantity can be zero.
- If the security is considered worthless, price it at .0001 per share (four decimal places) rather than zero so that the price x quantity amount.will appear in the Market Value field.
- If there are enough shares that even a price of .0001 per share results in a non-zero amount appearing in the Market Value field, try turning off the display of pennies. Do this by selecting Report Selection | Investment Reports | Options | Cents.

I used to see a legend at the bottom of reports that explained the B and P codes but it's gone. What happened?

The legend that explains the B,P, and S codes on your investement reports is in the footer. You can change the footer to show that or anything you want: - Run Combined Security Analysis by Symbol report on the screen.
- Select File | Print Preview.
- Select Layout.
- Select Footer.
- Paste the text below in the Footer Text box:
Market Value: B=Balance, P=Price x Qty, S=Sold. Page %d - Select the center text icon to center each line.
- Select OK. The report preview now shows the legend. Note the legend does not appear when you run a report to the screen, only in Preview & the printed report.
The Footer is set separately for each Report Group and for each user. So this change will affect all reports in the Investment Report Group that you run on your computer. It will not affect other groups like Income & Cash Flow, nor will it affect users on other computers.- David FNI Technical Support Case #38-11026 [This message has been edited by David (edited 05-27-2009).]
