I'm a new user, so this may be a very basic question; but, how do I categorize stocks & mutual funds into appropriate asset classes (ie.. large cap, small cap, mid-value, etc)?

Also - is it possible to also have sector categories ?

You can change any category name to suit your needs.

Review the Master Chart of Accounts and make sure that your category is not already listed. There is a category for Stock - Small Cap and Stock - Large Cap for example.

There are 7 Mutual Fund categories.

To change the name on the category:

  1. Highlight the category name to be changed
  2. Select Chart | Rename or the Rename command button.
  3. Type in name of your choice
  4. Select Enter on your keyboard

Then you can add at least one account and the new category will show up on your Custom Chart of Accounts.

You can make these changes from either the Master or Custom Chart of Accounts, however, if the category is not already on your Custom Chart of Accounts, you need to go to the Master Chart of Accounts.

FN currently does not have Sector Categories, however, you can set those up yourself by changing category names.

CAUTION:
Make sure when you change category names that you are using the correct Asset group (Marketable Investments) for stocks, bonds, mutual funds, etc.

If you change category names under another asset group, you may have to change the format type in order for FN to handle transactions appropriately. Please see post: What kinds of accounts appear on investment reports? for further information on format types.
