Hello,

I just recently purchased a Premium Membership from Morningstar. I wanted to take advantage of the exporting feature in Financial Navigator, and have Morningstar do an in depth analysis of my portfolio.

My problem is when I am at Morningstar’s Portfolio Import Screen. A java applet loads; first select the software type, either Intuit Quicken or Microsoft Money. After I click on Quicken a new window will appear called Import, in this window I click on the browse button and find where I exported the QIF file from Financial Navigator. Once I am done, I click on OK. An error message appears and say’s Morningstar encountered an error while importing the QIF file. How do I fix this?

Thanks for you help,

Rick James

Hi Rick,

The error message you are seeing is the result of a legal battle between Microsoft and Sun. It has nothing to do with the software you are using.

To fix this problem you need to check your Java settings, and make sure they are correct. In order to remedy this situation, please make sure you have Java and Javascript enabled:

If you are using Internet Explorer, please follow the steps below to enable Java:

1. Click on Tools
2. Choose Internet Options
3. Click on the Advanced tab
4. Scroll down to Microsoft VM and enable all Java options

If you do not have a Microsoft VM tab, you will need to download and install the program. I have included a link that will allow you to do this. After you download it, install it and return to the Advanced tab in Internet Options. Make sure all three boxes under Microsoft VM are checked and if you have a Java (Sun) heading above it, make sure that box is unchecked. Here is the link to Microsoft VM:

5. Click on the Security tab
6. Click on Custom level
7. Enable all Scripting options

If you are still encountering a problem after taking these measures, the problem may be caused by a security/anti-virus program. I recommend temporarily disabling any security or anti-virus program you have running (including any firewall) while you try to import. After you have exported, you can reactivate them.

Sincerely,

Matthew
