There have been a number of questions on this Forum about the Security Portfolio Analysis report. This topic summarizes and expands on some of the questions.How is Market Value calculated?
Note the legend at the bottom of the page for Market Value:
B = Balance
P = Price x Qty
S = Sold
Anytime the balance in the account does not equal the price x quantity then either a B or a P will be indicated. (This is true whether or not the Calculate option is set to show market value on the balance sheet.) See Why does Market Value not equal Price x quantity?
Why is Market Price wrong?
Maybe the Market Price (price per share) on the report should be labeled "Current market price" because it is really from the last time you updated prices. So, if you updated prices in November, your reports for January and any other month will show the November price per share, which is a little confusing. Not to worry; the Market Value (total value of the asset) is based on the balance in the report month, ignoring the future price per share. Likewise the Gain/Loss and other performance numbers are based on the value in the reporting month.
What accounts appear on report?
Security Portfolio Analysis report does not list securities if:
Why did report for prior months change?A partial sale of a security in any month after the report date will change the report.
- The partial sale account will show up on the report with _sld# in the account name, the number of shares sold, and a Market Value of $0. The remaining shares show up in the original account, so the total number of shares is correct. The balance in the original account for that month is actually the correct balance before the partial sale. So the total Market Value is correct. The Gain/Loss and other performance numbers are incorrect on the account rows, but the subtotals for the performance numbers are correct.
- If you revalue your securities in a prior month, the account balances will be incorrect if you had sales in later months.
A best practice is to finish printing and reconciling your investment reports for the month before entering any buy or sells in the next month. - David
