Thanks for the questions. Yes, it would be helpful to have a Transactions by Account report for an asset or liability that is grouped by account, with a heading for each group. But there is no such report. Part of the reason is that each transaction can be a multiple distribution, so a single transaction can hit many accounts. To see all the accounts affected, run the Transactions with Distributions report. Unfortunately, that report does not group or total by account.
As you noticed, sometimes a Transactions by Account report for an asset or liability will grouped by some accounts. That happens when you have a transfer of funds between two assets or an asset and a liability, for instance, paying a credit card. This is the same situation for which we recommend you use a transfer clearing account (TCA). Note that whether you use a TCA or not, the report correctly shows the destination account, not the TCA. If you don’t use TCA, the transaction will only show in one account’s transaction screen, but will show in both account’s Transactions by Account report.
You can turn off this grouping by accounts feature by clearing the check mark next to Memos on the Trans by Account Report Options screen. It is strange that the Memos checkbox has anything to do with grouping, but that’s the way it is.
