I would like to use the section immediately below the "tabs" on the stock web screen. In particular, I would like to be able to enter a security symbol even if the symbol is not listed on the left side of the screen. How do I do this? When I am already in stock web, how do I add symbols to the left side of the screen? How do I access FN help about stock web when I am using stock web?

Hello Margaret! In order to add a symbol to the list on the left side of screen, you need to go back into Financial Navigator (any entity), Investments, Edit Security File, then add the symbol of your choice, and save it. Then go to Stock Web tab in Financial Navigator and when the screen comes up you should be able to locate your new symbol with the down arrows. When you click on your new symbol, it should automatically come up to that section under the tabs. You can also use the down arrows in that section to find it. I do not know of a way to add the symbols while you are actually in Stock Web. I will try and research that further. You can also go to the "Look Up" tab which takes you to Yahoo! where you can get information you need on a particular stock for a one shot deal. On the far right of the tabs is the Stock Web help screen. Click on that, and you will find some help. Have a great weekend. ------------------ Pam de Jong/310-284-8528

Pam, you are exactly right. There is not a way currently to add a symbol to the list on the left while you are in the browser. If this list was added to then it would not end up being added to the symbol file for next time.1) Using symbol lookup or just entering the symbol on the chart or quote screens will give you the info for that symbol for one time request. 2) If you want to add the symbol to your symbol list then you need to Edit your symbol file just as Pam described. One other way is to edit the symbol file in StockWeb before you select Transmit. Select View | Edit Symbol File. Add the new symbol and save the file. Select View | Refresh to update the list of symbols shown. Now the new symbol will be included. Select Transmit just like normal to get the new symbol show in list on the left in your browser.

There is a way to temporarily add a symbol to the symbol list that appears on the left of the StockWeb screen from within StockWeb, without affecting the SYM2.DAT file (otherwise known as the symbol file).Use the steps listed below IF:
- You have a particular security symbol or symbols you wish to do some research on but you don't want to change your existing symbol file (SYM2.DAT), AND
- You wish to use all of the features of StockWeb (charts, financials, historial, etc) without typing in the same symbol for each of the features.
- You realize that the symbol you are about to use will appear on your StockWeb screen only for the current browser session. As soon as you close your browser, it will be gone.
If you want to add a symbol to your symbol file so that you can use it again, follow the steps described in the earlier posts in this topic. When you first access Stock Web, the Address Bar at the top of the browser window contains the following, assuming XXX and YYY are the only stock tickers in the symbol file: code:
http://www.finnav.com/cgi/sw.cgi?s=XXX+YYY&v=2&d=200109
The Address Bar will look different, depending upon what symbols you have in your symbol file. To have StockWeb look at different symbols,
- Start StockWeb as you normally would.
- Make sure the Address Bar is showing in your browser. For example, in Internet Explorer, select View | Toolbars | Address Bar. The commands may be slightly different in Netscape.
- Click on the Address Bar.
- Edit the symbols you wish StockWeb to access. Be certain that you keep intact everything at the beginning of the address, which is
code:
http://www.finnav.com/cgi/sw.cgi?s=
Also be certain that you keep intact everything at the end of the address, which is
code:
&v=2&d=200109
- After you're done editing, hit enter. The new symbols will appear in the symbol frame at the left of your browser window. Click on any of the symbols there to look at a chart, financials, history, etc. for that security.
- As soon as you end this browser session, these symbols will be lost. This good for "one time only."
