Suddenly half of my capital gains accounts from my income class are in the middle of my assets class on the chart of accounts.

I have started getting error messages that say "Error 35062 key is not unique in collection while loading data for chart of accounts."

The error message is telling you that you have a duplicate account.

  1. The error message will tell you which account is being duplicated. Make a note of the account name.
  2. Select Accounts | Change or Delete Account Name.
  3. Select the account you noted in step 1 above. Try to delete it.
  4. If the system tells you that there is a balance or that transactions exist, run a Transactions by Account report for that account for the entire year.
  5. Then try to delete it again.
  6. If that does not work you will have to add a new account (with a slightly different name) and reassign the transactions to the new account.
  7. Then delete the bad account.

I did as you suggested, downloaded the update and then deleted the duplicate accounts. Suprisingly, this did correct the problem that had already happened in the chart of accounts. The capital gains accounts moved back where they belonged in the income class. Thank you for your help!

I have a similar problem. I too, get the 35062 message, but am unable to access the duplicated, or troubled accounts by any method. In otherwords, I've tried to delete account in the manner suggested, but it doesn't allow me any access to the account no matter what method of entry I use. It just refuses to recognize that it exists, although it clearly shows up on the chart of accounts.

I'm wondering if reinstalling the program would be of any benefit?

I do not believe reintalling will have an affect.

The problem is with some account with the same name.
1) Run Test & Correct for All of the Above. This will test the Account Alphabetical index and the Chart of Account index. The account index should tell which account is duplicated.

2) Now from the Accounts menus, select Change or Delete Account Names instead of the Chart of Accounts. Now change the name of one of the duplicated accounts. After the duplicate account name is corrected the Chart of Accounts can be accessed.

Another situation where the error 35602 occurs is when the same account is listed in the Chart of Accounts twice.

If the account name that is on the error message appears only once in the account index, then maybe it is in the Chart of Accounts twice. Run Utilities | Test & Correct Files| Account Alphabetical Index to determine if the account name is in the account index twice.

To find if the name exists twice in the Chart of Accounts, select Reports | Chart of Accounts and select Screen. With the report on the screen, then find the account name and see if it is listed twice such as once under Liabilities and again under Income with the same account number. If so, the Chart of Account files need to be rebuilt.

To rebuild the Chart of Account files

  1. Before you begin this procuedure you should make a backup copy of the data files just in case.
  2. Switch to test mode by selecting Help | About Financial Navigator.
  3. Press the letter "t" and select Ok to the prompt "Set to Test Mode".
  4. Select Ok on the About dialog box to return to the FN desktop.
  5. Now select Utilities | Test & Correct Files | Rebuild Chart of Account Files.

The following things happen when the chart of accounts is rebuilt:

  • The Rebuild Chart of Account Files will recreate the Chart of Account from the account file.
  • The category names will be set to the default names.
  • The accounts will be in alphabetical order in the category.
  • The previously duplicated account will show up only in one place.
