Wanda: Thanks for the question.
It sounds like there might be a problem with the account alphabetical index. See the Forum post Some of my accounts are missing for the steps to repair the index. Also in the post are instructions to rebuild the Chart of Accounts files, if necessary. Do backup your data before rebuilding.
As an alternative, you can delete the correct account, which you say also deletes the duplicate account. Then reenter the transaction.
