Some parternship accounting is similar to what we call private equity accounting. There are some great references on our Resource Center that you might want to review:

Private Equity Accounting White Paper – Newest and most valuable. Some of the reports referred to are only in Navigator 9.0 but you can still do everything else it discusses in Navigator 8.2. Sample data also available if you want to see how it all works.
Barnes Case Study – Good example using a fictitious family showing how these principles work in practice. It’s rather long, let us know if you’d like a printed copy.
Partnership Accounting For Contributed Property – Another look at partnership (and private equity) accounting with good examples.
Partnerships – Five documents showing how to enter partnership transactions. These are somewhat dated but may help explain a few points that the other documents above miss.
