When on the broker web site, I select to see the broker statement online. Sometimes it opens fine in the browser. But for other months or accounts, the browser crashes in acrobat.
What is the solution?

The problem occurs when Acrobat or Acrobat Reader opens inside the browser. Change the settings to open Acrobat Reader as a separate program, not as a part of the browser.

The following directions apply to Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 (the free program) :

  1. Start Acrobat Reader. (Start | Programs | Acrobat Reader).

  2. Open the Preference box by typing Ctl+K. (Or select Edit | Preferences)

  3. Select Options from the list at the left of the box.

  4. Under Web Browser Options, uncheck the following two boxes:
    • Display PDF in browser
    • Check browser settings when starting Acrobat

  5. Select Ok to save the setting.

  6. Select File | Exit to close Acrobat Reader.

The following directions apply to Adobe Acrobat 5.0 (the full, paid program) :

  1. Start Acrobat. (Start | Programs | Acrobat).

  2. Open the Preference box by typing Ctl+K. (Or select Edit | Preferences | General)

  3. Select Options from the list at the left of the box.

  4. Under Web Browser Options, uncheck the following two boxes:
    • Display PDF in browser
    • Check browser settings when starting Acrobat

  5. Select Ok to save the setting.

  6. Select File | Exit to close Acrobat Reader.

The following directions apply to Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0:

  1. Start Acrobat Reader. (Start | Programs | Acrobat Reader).

  2. Open the General Preference box by typing Ctl+K. (Or select File | Preferences | General)

  3. Uncheck the option for [ ] Web Browser Integration.

  4. Select Ok to save the setting.

  5. Select File | Exit to close Acrobat Reader.

Now back in the browser, select the broker statement, just like before. When prompted to Open or Save the file, select Open to open the file using Acrobat or Acrobat Reader as a separate application.

Note: Once you have the file open, you can save it so that you have an electronic copy of the statement. This is a good idea since the statements are usually only available for the last 90 days. This way you can always find the statement to print another copy or email it to someone.

This problem does is not only related to broker statements but also to other large PDF files.
