How can I view the data that I am downloading from my broker? I know it's an OFX file and BrokerLink displays everything on the BrokerLink Transactions grid, but I'd like to see exactly what data the broker is sending.

Here’s how to view the OFX file yourself. This can help you understand what data the broker is sending to BrokerLink. There are a lot of steps below but it’s really pretty quick and easy.To view the BrokerLink OFX file that you downloaded from the broker: - Open the folder with the OFX downloads. This is normally in the BrokerLink folder in your Navigator program folder, or wherever you store your BrokerLink downloads.
- Double click on the OFX file. It should open in Notepad. If it doesn’t, see below.
- Look for the transaction in question. It is hard read since it isn’t nicely formatted. See below to format it. An easy way to find the transaction is select Edit | Find and search for the date, price, or just “SELLTOCLOSE”
To format the OFX file for easier viewing: - Go to http://fi.intuit.com/ofximplementation/dcsteps/index.cfm?view=dcdevelop/.
- Select Develop tab.
- Select OFX Formatter in the Helper Applications section.
- Save the file OFXFormatter.zip to your desktop.
- Double click on the OFXFormatter.zip file to open it.
- Drag or extract the unzipped files to a new folder, perhaps “OFXFormatter.” Leave that folder open for the next steps.
- Open the folder with the OFX downloads.
- Drag an OFX file and “drop” it on the OFXFormatter.exe file. A new file will be created in the OFX download folder. The new file will have the same name as the original OFX file but with a .tab suffix.
- Double click on the .tab file. It should open in Notepad. If it doesn’t, see below.
- View the OFX data in the nicely formatted display.
To use Notepad to view files - Double click on the .ofx or .tab file. A message appears “Windows cannot open this file.”
- Select Select the program from a list.
- Select OK.
- Select Notepad.
- Select Always use the selected program to open this kind of file.
- Select OK. Notepad open and displays the text in the file.
