When I begin to use Banklink I always get the error message with the Caution Triangle-Exclamation Point Icon and the following text: Put Data Disk in the Drive, using file :\USR.DAT. The work around is to first go to the sample data files for Dewey and Vera Goode and call up Banklink, which activates normally, and then return to my data files which then operate normally. I would appreciate any comments on what controls the triggering of this message. Thank You Richard

Hello Richard,The problem you describe can occur if your data files are located in the FN program folder (C:\Program Files\FN or C:\FN for example). You can do one of the following to avoid this error: 1. You can open the Sample data as before. However, you do not need to call up BankLink in the Sample data. Instead, you can immediately switch back to your data files. This is enough to establish that the path of your data files for BankLink. -or- 2.You can move your data files out of the FN program folder. This can be accomplished through the following:
- First, perform a backup of your data to ensure you can restore it in the event that something goes wrong. Afterwards, close FN.
- Create a new folder for your data on your computer. Typically, most users create their data folders in the FN program folder (C:\Program Files\FN\JSmith for example).
- Locate all of the files in your FN program folder that have a DAT extension. (USR2.DAT, ADR2.DAT, ACT2.DAT, etc). These are your data files. Also locate any FNO or OPT files you may have like BankLink.FNO and Fnreport.OPT.
- Copy all of these DAT, FNO, and OPT files into the new folder you have created in step B. When you start FN again you will now be prompted with the Open screen. Open the folder where you have copied your data files and BankLink will now work for this data from the start. Please respond to this post if you have any questions about this procedure.
Thank you for reporting this error. We will let you know when a new version of the software is available that can address this issue. --------------------------------------------- George Financial Navigator Int’l [This message has been edited by fni_support (edited 12-03-2003).]

Dear George,Thank you for your response. I have reviewed all of the files in the "root" fn directory on my computer and did not find any with .DAT .FNO or .OPT. Something else must be causing this message to appear. I will look forward to your advice. Incidentially, in your message above, under item four(4), did you inadvertantly instruct to "Copy..." instead of "Move...". Thank You Rich P.S. I modify the properties in the Start Up Icons and Desktop Shortcuts to indicate where my data files are located, by including the full file specification in the "Start In" field under the shortcut tab. It seems that this information is not "passed on" to BankLink.

Hello Richard,The "Start In" field on the shortcut path will need to be set to your FN program folder in order for BankLink to work in the first entity that you open. Instead of setting your "Start In" field to the path of your data files, try adding the path of your data files to the end of the "Target" field. For example, your Target might read: "C:\program files\FN\fnwin81.exe" c:\program files\fn\jsmith This would open the c:\program files\fn\jsmith data files when you started FN. Now you can set your "Start In" field to only the FN program folder, and BankLink will work immediately for the data you specified in your Target. Let us know how it turns out. --------------------------------------------- George Financial Navigator Int'l
