Sometimes I have to work on my BankLink download many times before I finish posting everything for the month. I try to open the .un9 file but get the error “Not a valid OFX file.” What it wrong?

Thanks for the question. The .un9 file is an intermediate file that has a mix of unposted and previously posted transactions. To avoid confusion and possible double posting, BankLink does not let you use this file. Use the .unp file instead.
Here is a summary of the transaction files in BankLink:
  • .ofx – Original file downloaded from bank.
  • .of9 – Same as .ofx file. BankLink renames the .ofx file to .of9 to avoid confusion and possible double posting. You can still open and post from this file if you need to for some special reason, for instance if you reset your transaction status in Navigator and want to start over again. BankLink will warn you that it contains previously posted transactions.
  • .unp – Unposted transactions. This file has only the transactions that you have not yet posted. It is created if you post some but not all of the transactions in the .ofx file. When you return to BankLink the next time, open the .unp file instead of the .of9 file. BankLink will then display only the transactions that haven’t been posted.
  • .un9 – Intermediate file. When you post some but not all of the transactions from the .unp file, BankLink creates a .un9 file. This file has a mix of unposted and previously posted transactions. Unlike the .of9 file, it does not have all the previously posted transactions, only the ones that were posted the last time you used the .unp file.
Note the file types above refer to OFX files. If your financial institution supplies QFX files, the corresponding files types are .qfx and.qf9. Likewise, if your financial institution supplies QIF files, the corresponding files types are .qif and.qi9.
In summary:
  • Use the .ofx file the first time you post transactions from a download.
  • Use the .unp file to post more transactions from the same download.
  • Use the .of9 file in special situations where you need to see transactions you have already posted.
  • Don’t use the .un9 file, it is not useful to you.
