What is the difference between the transaction statuses "released" vs. "outstanding" on checks?

There is no difference really. Usually, when you enter a new transaction, the status is Outstanding until it is reconciled. However, when you enter a check to be printed, the status is Print until it is printed when it changes to Released until it is reconciled.

Generally, Released indicates an outstanding check that Navigator printed but has not been reconciled yet. Outstanding indicates any other transaction that has not been reconciled yet.

You can set the default status code on the Transaction Activity Options screen: See also Status Field Enter Transactions
