I run the ROI Security Performance Detail report with a qualifier for one broker. Most transactions appear: dividends, unrealized gain and loss (UGL) changes from updating prices, and UGL and capital gains from selling stocks. However, I don’t see entries for the change in the balance of a stock’s account when I sell the stock. Shouldn’t there be an entry for the proceeds from the sale?

Thanks for the question. A performance report shows activity that affects your net worth or total assets.

Selling a stock allows you to realize gains and that activity is shown on the report.

The money you take out of a broker cash account to buy a stock doesn’t affect your net worth, since the asset is simply transferred from one account (broker cash) to another (the cost basis of the stock). Likewise, when you sell a stock, the portion of the proceeds that represent the cost basis of the stock is transferred from the stock to your broker cash account. There is no change in the value of you assets so nothing appears on the ROI Security Performance Detail report.

Thanks! Security Performance Detail is a good report that could be an excellent report if it included the buys and sells, even if their net affect is zero.
