Each time I start Navigator, I get an error message "Invalid Entity Type 0." I select OK and the Open screen appears. It doesn't create any problems, it's just annoying.

I'm using Navigator 9.0 Version 8.9.071.

That error message appears when you have an entity that was created many years ago in an earlier version of Navigator. Recent versions allow you to identify an entity as an individual or a business. This affects how equity appears at the bottom of the balance sheet. This feature was not available years ago.

Recent versions of Navigator (8.0-8.2) did not care about this. But Version 9.0 wants to know.

All you need to do is tell Navigator what type each entity is. Then you won't get the error message—and your balance sheet reports will be formatted correctly.

To set entity type

  1. Open an entity in 9.0. Doesn't matter what year.
  2. Select File | Change Entity Name.
  3. Follow the prompts till the end. You don't need to change anything. By default Navigator sets the entity type to "Individual Trust or Estate." If you appropriate, you can set it to "Business or Other Organization" instead.
  4. Repeat steps above for each entity. You don't need to do these steps for newer entities that you created in the last few years.
  5. Close Navigator and reopen it to verify that the error message no longer appears. If it does still appear, you may have missed some entities.
Our developers are working on a fix to automatically set old entities to "Individual Trust or Estate" in a future version of Navigator 9.0.
