We have extensive User Profiles set up in Navigator Version 8.2. Can we use the same profiles in 9.0?

Joseph:

Yes, you can. If you installed the Navigator Version 9.0 program in the same folder as the 8.2 programs, all you need to do is convert the 8.2 profile file to 9.0. See To Update User Profiles below.

If you installed the Navigator Version 9.0 programs in a different folder than the 8.2 programs, follow the steps below to copy the entity family file.

To copy User Profiles from 8.2 to 9.0:

  1. Open your Navigator 8.2 program folder using Windows Explorer. If you are using a single computer and no server, this is typically at C:\ProgramFiles\FN\. Contact Financial Navigator Technical Support if you are not sure or need any other assistance with this process. It is not necessary for users to stop using Navigator while you do these steps.
  2. Open your Navigator 9.0 program folder using Windows Explorer.
  3. Find the file fnu2.dat in the Navigator 9.0 program folder. If you have not yet set up any profiles in 9.0, that file will not exist and you can skip the next step.
  4. Rename the file fnu2.dat in the 9.0 folder to something like fnu2_20081201.dat using the year, month, and day to indicate the date. This creates a backup copy of your old 9.0 User Profile file.
  5. Copy the entity family file fnu2.dat from the 8.2 folder to the 9.0 folder.
  6. Follow the steps below to update the User Profiles.
To Update User Profiles
  1. Start Navigator 9.0.
  2. Enter your password. An error message will appear like “Function 123 not found to set menu permission. Permission is not allowed. Update User Profiles to allow permissions.”
  3. Select OK to close the error message. A new error message may appear.
  4. Repeat Step 8 about six times until the error messages stop and you are on the normal open screen.
  5. Open any entity.
  6. Select File | Manage User Profiles. Notice the Update button is active.
  7. Select Update. The Update User Permissions screen appears.
  8. Select Yes. This will update your User Profile file from 8.2 to 9.0. The Edit All Users screen appears.
  9. Review the settings on the Edit All Users screen. They should be the same as they were in 8.2.
  10. Select OK to close the Edit All Users screen. The Manage User Profiles screen appears.
  11. Review the list of users. They should be the same as they were in 8.2.
  12. Select OK to close the Manage User Profiles screen. You are back on the Navigator 9.0 desktop.
Updating is required because Navigator 9.0 add many new features to the menus. By default, only the Admin has access to these new features. If you want specific users to be able to use the new features, edit the profile for each user (or all users). An example of a new features are Utilities | Inactivate Investments Sold in Prior Years
